Job Title: Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety I

Job Description 

Open to any office location: Glendale, San Diego, Alamo or Granite Bay.

Position Summary:

The Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety I reports to the Vice President of Risk Management and serves as an expert risk consultant to over 250 healthcare entities insured by BETA Risk Management Authority and HealthPro RRG. This position is responsible for reviewing, designing and supporting policy or organizational programs based on current legislation, national, statewide and local trends and make recommendations at the senior management level to enhance safety and mitigate risk at member organizations. Is also responsible for data management and education components of risk management programs and services to include leading and promoting patient safety and risk management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
Incumbent must have the skills, abilities, and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Maintains a network of informational sources and experts; performs risk assessments and onsite evaluations of member organizations to include patient care areas; reviews facility programs and processes to assess loss potential
• Maintains risk management statistics and files
• Collects and analyzes relevant data concerning patient injuries; aggregates data summaries, maintains statistical trending losses and other risk management data
• Performs proactive analysis of patient safety and medical errors processes
• Serves as consultant to BETA members on matters related to communication with patients and families in face of medical error
• Maintains awareness of legislative and regulatory activities related to healthcare risk management
• Conducts research and responds to professional liability and general liability questions posed by BETA members and insureds
• Recommends appropriate revisions to new or existing policies and procedures to mitigate risk; recommends ways to minimize risk through system changes; reviews and provides recommendations to BETA members and insureds regarding facility policies as appropriate to maintain adherence to current standards and requirements.
• Provides in-service training at all levels of organization to raise awareness to current and emerging risk exposure
• May have on-call responsibility
• Telecommute up to 5 days a week

Travel Responsibilities:
• Must have reliable and safe transportation to other BETA offices and business partners.
• This position requires 40% travel within the state of California, Oregon and Washington

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• This position may be responsible to supervise Administrative Assistant or other administrative staff

Job Requirements 

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
• BS degree; MS preferred
• Minimum five (5) years’ experience in hospital or health system risk management
• Valid driver’s license, proper vehicle registration and California’s minimum automobile insurance coverage limits
• California licensed RN, NP or PA
• CPHRM or CPPS preferred (required within 12 months of hire)
• Certification in Just Culture achieved within 12 months of hire
• Clinical nursing experience required
• Public speaking experience required
• Excellent analytical skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Proficient with MS Office to include use of PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook and MS Teams
